The dress I’m wearing is one of my favorite from my sister Mary Ann Kaikai’s clothing brand, Madam Wokie. It was part of her runway collection at Africa Fashion Week New York in 2011. The fabric, which is our traditional Mende Country Cloth, was locally produced by local artisans in Kenema, Sierra Leone. Country Cloth is usually made from locally grown cotton, carded and spun into thread, and woven into strips on traditional looms. The strips are then sewn together to form the finished product.
